alb3676915 Still Life with a Ginger Jar and Eggplants. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 28 1/2 x 36 in. (72.4 x 91.4 cm). Date: 1893-94.For this commanding still life, with its richly orchestrated play of overlapping shapes, patterns, colors, and textures, Cézanne relied on a stock of familiar objects. The raffia-corded ginger jar, for example, is featured in more than a dozen compositions, including three of comparable verve dating to the early 1890s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3627769 Seated Peasant. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 21 1/2 x 17 3/4 in. (54.6 x 45.1 cm). Date: ca. 1892-96.The mood and palette of this pensive figure study relate it to Cézanne's celebrated series of paintings showing men playing cards. This particular individual does not appear in any of those pictures, but there can be no doubt that he, like the models for the card players, was one of the workers at Jas de Bouffan, the Cézanne family estate in Aix-en-Provence. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3607725 Rocks in the Forest. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 28 7/8 x 36 3/8 in. (73.3 x 92.4 cm). Date: 1890s.Cézanne treated the rocks in this composition much as he did the fruits in his still lifes, rendering the shapes with passages of subtly varied color. Green, blue, and purple tints, with an accent of golden sunlight at center, impart a shimmering vibrancy to the stones. The sense of delicacy is enhanced by the thin, watercolor-like application of pigment, typical of Cézanne's oils in the mid-1890s. Scholars traditionally identified the setting as the forest of Fontainebleau, where the artist worked around 1894, but it has also been suggested that the site is near Aix-en-Provence. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3640079 Antoine Dominique Sauveur Aubert (born 1817), the Artist's Uncle. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 31 3/8 x 25 1/4 in. (79.7 x 64.1 cm). Date: 1866.In the autumn of 1866, while living at his family's home near Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne undertook a series of paintings of his maternal uncle, Dominique Aubert, in different costumes. Here, he dons a robe and tasseled blue cap; in another work in the Museum's collection, he poses as a monk (1993.400.1). A friend reported in November: "Every day there appears a [new] portrait of him." Cézanne applied his paint directly with a palette knife on the coarsely woven canvas, giving these pictures what he called a "gutsy" character. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3618411 St. Jerome Reading in an Italian Landscape. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: plate: 10 3/16 x 8 1/4 in. (25.9 x 21 cm). Date: ca. 1653.Rembrandt depicted Saint Jerome many times, here as a contented old man reading. The print reflects Rembrandt's great admiration for Venetian art, particularly in the landscape and buildings in the background, which were inspired by the work of Giulio (ca. 1482-after 1515) and Domenico (1500-1564) Campagnola. The marked contrast between the briefly sketched saint and the more polished areas of the print creates an initial impression of unfinish. Rembrandt's sketch for the print shows that he originally intended to darken the saint and the foreground. In the end, however, he left them blank but for the outlines in order to create an effect of bright sunlight. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

alb4404768 Paul Cézanne: Boy in a Red Vest (Le Garçon au gilet rouge), Paul Cézanne, 1888–1890, Oil on canvas, Cézanne lived in an apartment on the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris between 1888 and 1890. This painting of an Italian boy is one of the many figural works he produced at that location. While we know the boy's identity—he was a professional model named Michelangelo de Rosa who posed for Cézanne several times—the artist didn't intend this as a portrait in the traditional sense. Rather, the painting is perhaps better understood as a study in human psychology and emotion. Shoulders slumped, mouth turned down, eyes staring into the distance, the boy seems a picture of melancholy., Overall: 25 3/4 x 21 1/2 in. (65.4 x 54.6 cm).
